How to Set Alerts when Reaching a Certain Position on Google (Google Search Console)

If you're working to improve your keyword rankings, you might want to track when a page hits a specific position in Google search results using data from Google Search Console.

While Databox Goals are typically used for tracking progress, they don’t work well for position metrics where lower values are better. For example, if you set a goal for position 10, and your current position is already 40, Databox will treat that as “goal achieved” and won’t notify you when your ranking improves. Instead, the better approach is to use Alerts, which can notify you when your position drops to or below your target.

How to set up an alert for position improvements

To receive notifications when your Google Search Console metric drops to a certain position or better, use the Alerts feature instead.

  1. Navigate to Alerts (Notifications > Alerts) and click + New Alert.

  2. Next, you need to set your alert condition. Search for the relevant Position metric from Google Search Console.

  3. Set the condition to "is less than X". For example, “is less than 11” if you want to know when you break into the top 10 positions.

  4. Select Last 30 days as your timeframe and choose who should receive the alert (yourself or teammates).

  5. Once set, you’ll get notified as soon as your ranking improves to the position you’re targeting.

Using Alerts instead of Goals for position metrics ensures you get notified when rankings improve, not just when they exceed a threshold. This gives you more accurate visibility into the impact of your SEO efforts.
